On a recent day trip to the Niagara Falls area, my husband, our 8 year old daughter and I visited The Laura Secord Homestead which is one of several heritage sites operated by the Niagara Parks Commission. The homestead is located in the village of Queenston just off the Niagara Parkway and only a few minutes drive from Niagara Falls. The restored homestead was the residence of Canadian heroine Laura Secord from 1803-1835.
A wonderful attraction for families visiting the Niagara Falls, Canada area is The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory which is located on the Niagara Parkway about 10 minutes from the Falls. The Conservatory is located on the grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture. The Butterfly Conservatory is open year-round (except for Christmas) although the hours vary depending on the time of year.
Niagara Falls is a fun-filled family vacation spot and only an hour's drive from our home but for some reason we haven't been there for several years. Emma has no recollection of having seen the Falls and she has never been on The Maid of the Mist boat tour so we decided this past long weekend to take a day trip to Niagara Falls. We got a bit of a late start and had to detour because of a highway closure so it was late morning before we arrived and parked. It was a beautiful sunny day and the views of the Falls were spectacular as we walked the length of the Falls area to get to the loading docks for The Maid of the Mist. It was brutally hot so the spray coming off the Falls was actually quite refreshing.
