Discover Canada: 100 Inspiring Outdoor Adventures is the recently published guide written by award-winning travel blogger Leigh McAdam. Having been an avid reader of Leigh's travel blog Hike, Bike, Travel for many years, I began looking forward to the publication of this book as soon as I first learned that she was working on it.
Discover Canada details 100 adventures that Leigh has personally experienced during her coast-to-coast travels across Canada. Leigh has made a point of selecting uniquely Canadian adventures from each province and territory in order to showcase the country's diversity. There are adventures for all four seasons including hiking and backpacking trips, single and multi-day bike rides, kayak and canoe trips, cross-country skiing, skating and rafting.
As my experience in the outdoors is rather limited, one of the things that I loved most about this guide is that she has included adventures that require a range of skill levels. There are appropriate adventures for experienced outdoors people like Leigh who are up to a challenge and also for those like myself who are just looking to enjoy the beauty of the Canadian outdoors. Adventures are rated as "easy", "moderate", or "difficult" and the easy adventures are all family-friendly which is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the beauty of Canada. General safety tips are also included in the book as well as specific considerations to keep in mind on each of the adventures listed.
Each adventure includes a description and gorgeous photos as well as practical information such as cost, time needed and gear required. As I read through the book, I found myself making a mental list of those that I would most like to experience including kayaking around the Hopewell Rocks in the Bay of Fundy, cross-country skiing in Gatineau Park, hiking the Maligne Canyon Icewalk in Jasper National Park, and walking the trails of Dinosaur Provincial Park in eastern Alberta.
Leigh has seen more of this country that anyone I know and she would be the first person that I would ask for advice on outdoor travel in Canada. I highly recommend her book as both an excellent resource and a source of inspiration for Canadians and for visitors to the country who would like to experience the outdoors. Reading the book has made me realize just how little of our beautiful country that my family has actually explored and inspired me to make more of an effort to plan our own Canadian adventures.
