I'm delighted to welcome guest poster Janis Couvreux to share her experience on living on a sailboat with a family. Janis and her husband spent 10 years at sea with their young sons and she has recently published a book about their adventures.
One of our best experiences this past summer was a six night mother-daughter getaway to British Columbia. As part of this trip, my 15 year-old and I spent two nights in Victoria, the beautiful provincial capital located on the southern tip of Vancouver, Island. Although our visit wasn't nearly as long as we would have liked, we discovered that there are many fun things to do in Victoria.
For many years, we have given ourselves the gift of travel for Christmas so I'm always on the lookout for great Christmas holiday getaways for families to add to my wish list. I asked a few family travel writers for their recommendations for hotels and resorts that are great for family holiday getaways and came up with this list of 8 that are particularly special during the holiday travel season.
Visiting all 10 Canadian provinces is on my travel bucket list but as of the beginning of this past summer vacation I hadn't been to either Manitoba and Saskatchewan so my teenage daughter and I made plans for a mother-daughter getaway to Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. It was a quick visit as we only stayed for two nights and had the equivalent of two full days for sightseeing but it was just enough time to get a sense of the city and the many fun things to do in Winnipeg (with or without kids).
Munich (München in German), the capital of the German state of Bavaria, is one of Germany's largest cities and most popular tourist destinations. It's a modern cosmopolitan city with a strong sense of history and Bavarian tradition and it goes without saying that there are more things to do in Munich, Germany than can be experienced in just one day. It is only possible on a short visit to touch on the top things to do in Munich but one day is enough to provide a taste of the city that will leave you wanting to return for more. It is said that Munich is the city where most Germans would like to live and after our visit it was easy to understand why.
I'm delighted to welcome guest poster Mary Chong of Calculated Traveller Magazine with her review of Sirata Beach Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida.
The sound of giggles and laughter of the children as they chase the birds on the beach mixed with the sound of the surf as I lay under my umbrella in the sun at Sirata Beach Resort on St Pete Beach Florida is infectious.
If your family's idea of the perfect vacation involves spending sunny days building sandcastles on the beach, splashing in the ocean waves or lounging by the pool then you can't go wrong with a holiday at the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Located on the southwest coast of Florida between Sanibel and Naples, the resort is ideally located for anyone in Florida or the southern states who wants a beach vacation within driving distance. It is also just 16 miles from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) so it's an easy destination to fly to from the northern U.S. and Canada.
One of the most difficult decisions when planning a trip to New York City is where to stay. There are a lot of hotels to choose from and narrowing down that choice isn't easy. We have stayed at quite a few hotels in New York with our kids over the years and one of our favourites is The Benjamin. We have stayed here three of our past four trips to New York City and have already booked for our annual Labour Day weekend trip to the city this year. These are five of the reasons that I believe The Benjamin is a great hotel choice for families visiting New York.
When I started planning one of our family trips to Europe a few years ago, I had no intention of visiting Disneyland Paris. I assumed it would be a waste of precious time in Paris since we had already been to the parks in Florida and California. My daughters were of a different mind though and they started negotiating for a day at Disneyland Paris as soon as we had decided where we were spending our spring break.
If you are a fan of movie musical The Sound of Music then it's likely that a visit to Salzburg, Austria to tour the Sound of Music locations is high on your travel wish list. Our family loves the movie and my younger daughter has been in the stage version of the musical twice so we knew when planning our recent trip to Germany and Austria that Salzburg would be a highlight.
